Purple Class is working at Key Stage 2 and follows the National Curriculum which is differentiated to meet the pupils' level of ability. Literacy and Numeracy are taught in the morning sessions, whilst the afternoon sessions focus on the Foundation Subjects of Science, Music, Art, Design and Technology, Physical Education and Personal, Social and Health Education.

We have a busy half term ahead of us in Purple class!

Literacy: This half term we will be looking at a range of fiction and non-fiction books, related to the sea and in particular the 'Big Blue Whale'. We are going to work on children’s ability to recognise speech within a story and use speech bubbles in their own writing. We will also be finding out some facts about the Big Blue Whale.

Numeracy: As usual we will be working on a wide range of skills this half term. We will continue to work with the Numicon system, which the children really enjoy and it seems to be having a positive effect on their understanding of number. The children will be building on their knowledge of position and direction. We will be learning about length this half term and measuring in cm.

History: This half term our topic is ‘Christopher Columbus’. We will start by looking at who he was and where he came from. We will then move onto the life on board ship and the countries that he visited on his travels. We will then look at what America was like when he first got there and find out a bit more about native American Indians and how they lived.

Music: This term our topic is pitch and the children will be exploring making high and low pitched sounds. Children will work on simple compositions using pictorial scales and will move onto a simple pentatonic scale (with 5 notes) when they are ready.

Art: We will be looking at the patterns and prints created by some artists and thinking about patterns that we can see all around us. We will be printing using different mediums and then moving on to create our own patterns. We will also be looking at and designing patterns of fish and sea creatures.

PE: Our focus this half term is Athletics. PE lessons are on a Tuesday this half term and please ensure you child has PE kit in school, including a change of shoes for going outside. The children will practice running, jumping and throwing skills ready for Sports Day on the 25th June.

ICT: This term we will be learning to combine text and graphics and will be making their own simple books for sharing with the rest of the class.
